The supermarket staff canteen at which James worked and in which I spent my supermarket lunchbreak was a sombrous and sanitised affair. It contained plain little wooden tables, a few vending machines, a counter where hot food was served at certain times of day and a pool table that rarely worked and at which I sometimes played games against a disabled girl who I was quite fond of. The walls, floor and ceiling of the canteen were an identical shade of deep beige. There was also a sealed off smoking area.
